In our continued effort to shine a light on the fantastic StrummerJam organisers, we’re super excited to share this one with you. Jeff Raspe is the Music Director at non-commercial radio station WBJB-FM (Brookdale Public Radio/90.5 The Night) in Lincroft NJ and is the joint organiser of Summer StrummerJam 2017 in Asbury Park, New Jersey on August 19th.
We asked Jeff these 5 questions, here’s what he had to say:
1. In three words what does Joe Strummer mean to you?
Honesty. Music. Integrity.
2. Why are you participating in StrummerJam this year?
Seemed like a good idea at the time. 😉 Always been a fan of Joe (The Clash/solo/The Mescaleros). Great friends with Jesse Malin who I knew was also a fan and friend of Joe’s. Happened to see the “call” for StrummerJam events to happen in August 2017 and thought that between Jesse and myself we could put together a great night of music.
3. What are your goals for your StrummerJam?
Have fun. Raise some money. Raise awareness of the causes (Music & Memory and The Joe Strummer Foundation). Get a bunch of like-minded folks together for a great cause and a great night of music at a legendary music venue.
4. What do you have planned?
Headlining set from Jesse Malin & his band, supported by Asbury Park favorites The Vansaders and Matty Carlock. Ending the night with an all-star birthday tribute set to Joe with Jesse’s band as the house band. Guests to include Brian Fallon, Craig Finn & Tad Kubler of The Hold Steady, Ted Leo, Patrick Stickles of Titus Andronicus, Richard Barone of The Bongos, Hollis Brown, Anthony D’Amato, Daniel Rey of The Dictators, and more.
5. Who will benefit and what do they do?
Besides The Joe Strummer Foundation, our primary beneficiary will be Music & Memory. They are a non-profit organization that brings personalized music into the lives of the elderly or infirmed through digital music technology, vastly improving the quality of life. They train nursing home staff and other elder care professionals, as well as family caregivers, how to create and provide personalized playlists using iPods and related digital audio systems that enable those struggling with Alzheimer’s, dementia and other cognitive and physical challenges to reconnect with the world through music-triggered memories.
We too have been admirers of the work of Music and Memory for quite some time, so it’s a real honour and pleasure be doing this StrummerJam with you Jeff! If you’re in or around the Asbury Park area on 19th August, make sure to call into The Stone Pony.
Thank you to the venue, the bands and of course your good self for donating your time, energy and taking action. We salute all!
