In our continued effort to shine a light on the people who make StrummerJam happen – the Joe Strummer fans, awesome bands, venues and supporters of grassroots music scenes around the world, who are participating in StrummerJam to help make a change to the world, Jeffrey Glover, the organiser of StrummerJam 2017 at The Breakwall tells us his story:
1. In three words what does Joe Strummer mean to you?
My Personal Hero
2. Why are you participating in StrummerJam this year?
I feel StrummerJam is an extraordinary way to honor the spirit of a great man and to be able to affect change in this world through music and am proud to be able to be part of it.
3. What are your goals for your StrummerJam?
The goal of our event is to provide a fantastic day of music on the docks of Lake Erie all while raising money to help less fortunate kids be able to participate in a program that teaches them about the power of music and beauty of making it with others and performing in front of people at a young age.
4. What do you have planned?
We have a live on air promotion for our event on WERG 90.5FM on 8/2/17 and then on 8/6/17 we are putting on an all day concert featuring musicians from Conneaut OH, Erie PA, Meadville PA, and Cleveland OH. We have bands, solo performers, and also two acts from the Rock School Erie program who the event is raising money to set up an endowment for at need kids. We plan to culminate the day with a Strummerville-style bonfire & jam after the sun has set over the great lake.
5. Who will benefit and what do they do?
Rock School Erie are our beneficiaries. They work with kids, matching them up based on age, skill level, and musical styles, putting them into bands, each with their own instructors. They learn about coming together as a group, choosing songs, naming the band, working together and supporting each other. There is always one end of session show with all the acts but generally, the bands also pick up other gigs along the way, especially if the same groups stay together through several sessions. The program is completely tailored to the kids and their desire to spread their musical wings.
StrummerJam 2017 at The Breakwall looks to be an amazing event, raising funds for such a wonderful cause. Featuring performances by The Boom Shakalakas, JC Nickles, Mala Sangre, McKenzie Lee Sprague, Matthew Crays, Paolello & Gone, Jay Baumgardner, Zach Scott, and Jeffrey Glover.
